Pre-Photo Session Warm-Up
Let’s talk about the importance of pre-photo session warm ups. What is this, you may ask? This is the time during which the photographer and family interact before the session begins. Most family photographers suggest that you arrive a little early for your appointment, perhaps 15 minutes early, so they can get to know each other. Children, in particular, may find it somewhat intimidating to interact with someone they have never met before. Photographers want to ensure that they can really showcase your child’s personality, so they wish to make sure that he or she is comfortable with them and with the surroundings when they are taking photographs.
Ideally, you should arrive early so that the photographer may introduce themselves to your children and family and get a sense of how the session will proceed. Some children warm up right away, while others need the entire warm up period to feel comfortable and come out of their shells. It’s okay if that is the case.
After the photographer introduces herself/himself, she/he will attempt to get to know your children. They will ask them questions about what they like, what they dislike, sing songs, perhaps play a game, etc. Just to break the ice a little, so that by the time the photo shoot begins, your children will be more comfortable with the photographer. It is probably one of the most important tips most photographers can give you regarding your family photography session to arrive early enough to have this time.
As soon as your children realize that the photographer is not frightening and that they actually enjoyed their session, the next session should not require much warm-up time. However, it is usually recommended for the very first meeting!
