Maternity Photography Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time to schedule my maternity photos?

A general rule of thumb is that most maternity photographers will suggest that you schedule your maternity session as soon as you have told your friends and family that you are expecting! This will ensure that they have plenty of time to come up with a great date that will work for both you and the photographer. Generally, maternity photos are taken when you are showing — generally around the 7th or 9th month of pregnancy — if you are showing.

When it comes to my maternity session, how many outfits should I bring with me?

There are two to four outfits that are recommended by most photographers for your maternity session. You should always bring along a backup outfit or two just in case you’re not feeling the outfit you planned on wearing when you get to the event.

When it comes to planning my maternity outfits, what should I take into account?

There is a consensus among most photographers that you should wear something that makes you feel both comfortable and beautiful. Make sure you choose a top that isn’t black or white and that is form-fitting enough to show off your growing baby bump. Lastly, make sure that you wear a bra that is supportive and well-fitted. Make sure that you pick up a new bra that fits perfectly before our session to ensure that there is no discomfort or lumps or bumps.

What are the best places for us to take photographs?

Depending on the type of session we are shooting, the location where we take photos will vary. If you are planning a maternity or gender reveal session, outdoor photographs that allow your photographer to maximize access to natural light would be ideal. This can be either in the middle of a beautiful pasture, in a quaint park, in the woods, or even in the middle of an urban area.

Is it possible for my partner or child to be included in the photographs as well?

Yes, of course! Most photographers enjoy incorporating mom, dad, and any other children that you have into the photos that we take during the session. Although it’s likely that you and dad will be the stars of the day in most cases, it’s also important to make sure that the entire family is included in several photos on the day.
